Building Blocks of Belly Dance [$90 for six week]

Building Blocks takes takes students through a program of the essential base technique changing its focus every six weeks to a different core area of the body.  We covering The Belly, Arms and Hands, Shimmies, Footwork and The Torso.  The focus is a good technique grounding in the essential core movements of belly dance that allow you to specialise in a particular style.  The best class for beginners or those who want to tighten their technique.  For those wishing to study a non-tribal style and a deeper understanding of middle eastern dance, check out classes by Moonjelly contact: dance@moonjellybellydance.co.nz

Tribal Style Belly Dance -  from beginners to troupes [$15]

Wellington ’s Tribal Style takes beginners through program of the essential base technique to tribal that includes: 4 familys of movement, leading and following, posture and some core strengthening techniques.  We also use these base movements and add a layer of performance, the focus is on working as a group and creating performance level improv pieces.

Level 2 Tribal – beyond beginners [$11] * depends on membership status with SCBD

This is for students at the School of Contemporary Belly Dance in Christchurch who have completed their Level 1 Introductory course and are ready to specialize in Tribal.  Students work through an 18 week lesson plan that leads them to perform on stage at the School’s Club Orientale.

Level 3 Tribal – intermediate/advanced [$11] * depends on membership status with SCBD

This is for students at the School of Contemporary Belly Dance in Christchurch who have passed their Level 2 Tribal assessments, or working towards sitting their assessment.  Students work towards six monthly performances and entry in the MEDANZ festival.  They are encouraged to work independently on improv work and submit pieces for the regular Open Night and Hafla events.

Tribal Fusion

What is Tribal Fusion? Essentially Tribal Fusion mixes oriental and tribal movements together in a choreography format with a strong focus on isolation and muscular accents.  The vocabulary differs only in the way the movement is performed by using a higher degree of muscle control in conjunction with a specific set of movements.  The style should begin with a strong understanding of Middle Eastern rhythms and oriental movement, this will be a focus in the class.  Tribal Fusion can be performed as a soloist or as a group, but the focus for the class will be on group work.

This 60 minute class includes belly dance strengthening drills to make your muscles ache.

This is a mixed level class that you can attend if you are a Level 2 Oriental student with some tribal exposure or a Level 2 Tribal student with some oriental exposure.  Recommendation is one term of both, but this is not a requirement.

In Wellington this runs as a building block course, six weeks of Tribal Fusion muscle isolation and movement control to create the Tribal Fusion dance.

Drills

A session for E-Lysaah to drill movements upcoming in classes and review choreographies that will be taught to students of SoCBD.  A non-teaching hour that students are welcome to attend to improve their dance.

Red Queen Extension

Extension steps up the technique level to hard and dancers need to have a strong level of skill and strength to complete the movements.  Dancers are should be committed to performance and prepared to not only critique themselves but others.   The sign on the door to these sessions reads "please place all egos in the bin provided".  You'll find E-Lysaah, A'mal and other dancers extending themselves and working hard on class choreographies and performance items.

About Classes

Her classes reflect a structured environment and can be tailored to work with what is best for the student.  Classes will target muscle groups and use yoga poses for stretching and focus.  E-Lysaah has worked with troupes and individuals, developed improvised arrangements for groups and run general level workshops.

Classes at the School of Contemporary Belly Dance are specifically structured to a lesson plan and incorporate a base of FatChance posture and movement, with selected Gypsy Caravan and Ghawazi Caravan movements.

ALL classes involve isolation, muscle control and strong posture.
